MAN — The Tug Valley High School boys’ basketball team made it a clean sweep of the regular season as they clawed the host Man Hillbillies 89-48 before a capacity crowd on Friday night at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse.
The Class A No. 4-ranked Panthers (12-3) used a balanced scoring attack by placing six players in double digit scoring for the victory. The No. 9-ranked Billies fell to 11-4.
Man was led in scoring by John Thomas Keffer with 17 points.
Kenny Jo Adkins added 10, followed by Jake Adkins with 11, Gabby Brown with five, Zack Cook with three and Josh Adkins with two.
The Panthers were led by Garrett Brown with 18 points. Jeremy Dillion and Tyler May tossed in 15 points each, while Calvin Blankenship tallied 14, Chandler Runyon netted 11 and Johnathan Blankenship pumped in 10. Corbin Oliver had four points.
Tug Valley led 17-13 after one quarter, 41-28 at the half and 65-36 after three. A 24-12 fourth then set the final score.
Man took an early 4-0 lead on jumpers by Kenny Jo Adkins and Brown, but the Panthers went on a 9 -0 run to take the lead for good at 11-4 after three field goals by Dillion during the run.
The Billies cut the Panthers’ lead to 13-11 on an offensive stickback by Jake Adkins with 1:51 on the first period clock. Dillion then hit a 12-foot jumper with just five ticks left on the clock as TVHS took a 17-13 lead after the first quarter.
The Panthers pushed their lead to nine points at the 6:02 mark on an old-fashioned three-point play by Runyon.
Garrett Brown drained a 3-pointer with 2:45 on the clock to give Tug Valley a 34-23 advantage.
Keffer hit a runner in the lane to make it 34-26 with 1:33 to go.
Runyon then hit a 3-ball with just three ticks on the clock as the Panthers took a 41-28 lead into the locker room.
Tug Valley outscored Man 24-15 in the second stanza.
The Panthers came out and pushed their lead to 18 points at 50-32 with 4:39 to go as May converted four-point play by hitting a 3-pointer and then the free throw.
Calvin Blankenship also hit a bucket in the mini run, forcing Man head coach Harvey Arms to take a time out.
May then drained another 3 to give the Panthers a commanding 59-36 lead with 1:59 on the clock.
Man could not get anything to fall as the Panthers went on a 6-0 run in the final minute of play on baskets by Jonathan Blankenship, May and Garrett Brown to take a 65-36 advantage heading into the final stanza.
The Panthers started the fourth frame with a 6-0 run on two fast break baskets by Brown and a layup off the glass by Calvin Blankenship to swell the TVHS lead to 71-36 with 6:34 left.
Keffer hit a 3-pointer to make it 71-39 with 6:18 to go.
The Panthers put the game on ice with a 6-0 run to take a 40-point lead at 79-39 on two baskets by Brown and a 3-ball by May.
Man will play Monday at 9 a.m. against Paden City in the Little General Shootout at the Big House at Charleston Civic Center.
