Billies roll Tide 73-45, now 13-4

MAN — The Man High School boys’ basketball team scored a convincing 73-45 win over the Sherman Tide Tuesday night at Man Memorial Fieldhouse as the Billies improved to 13-4 on the season.

The Tide fell to 6-13 with the loss.

Man placed four players in double digits in scoring as Billies’ senior lefty Jake Adkins went over the 1,000-point club in his career. He had 999 points going into the game and got his 1,001st point on a jumper with 2:16 to go on the first quarter.

“We played good tonight, played excellent defense and on the boards, got out and ran the ball well and got some easy baskets. We also got balanced scoring again,” Man head coach Harvey Arms said.

Man was led in scoring by John Thomas Keffer and Cameron Simpson with 16 points each. Adkins netted 12 points and eight rebounds, while Kenny Jo Adkins tallied 12 points, six assists and six steals.

Marquel Brown finished with seven points and seven boards, while Josh Adkins had four points, four blocked shots and five rebounds. Brandon Cook and Zach Cook tallied four and two points respectively.

Sherman was led in scoring by Caleb Duncan with 15 points. Tyler Kirk netted eight and Will Hensley and Bailey Kirk had seven points each. Blake Nelson had three, Luke Skeens and Tyler Pettry had two each and Chris Layton had one point.

Man was 28-for-55 shooting from the floor and 16-for-26 from the free throw line. The Tide made 16-of-48 field goals and was 11-for-20 from the line.

The Billies jumped out to an early 10-4 lead and never looked back on two free throws by Brown at the five minute mark.

Man pushed its margin to 15 on baskets by Kenny Jo Adkins and back-to-back buckets by Jake Adkins with 1:09 to play in the opening stanza as Man took a commanding 24-7 lead after first period.

MHS continued to pull away from the Tide in the second quarter of play.

Man swelled its lead to 20 points at 31-11 with 5:03 to play on fast break baskets by Keffer and Jake and Kenny Jo Adkins.

Kirk hit a runner in the lane and added two free throws for the Tide to make it 35-14 with 3:08 left in the first half.

Keffer then hit 4-of-6 free throws in the final two minutes of play and Simpson hit a shot at the buzzer to give Man a 43-20 lead heading into the locker room.

Man pushed its lead to 25 points to open the second half of play on a floater in the lane by Keffer to make it 45-20.

Kirk then hit a shot at buzzer to make it 58-31 Man heading into the final eight minutes of play.

The Billies continued to roll in the fourth quarter.

Simpson hit a 12-foot jumper to give the Billies a 61-32 lead with 6:11 on the clock.

Hensley hit a 3-pointer for Sherman to make it 63-35 with 4:48 to play in the game.

Simpson and Josh Adkins hit baskets for the Billies to push the lead to 30 points at 67-37 with 3:57 to play.

Coach Harvey Arms then elected to empty his bench in the final three minutes of play as Man went on for the win.

The Billies play at Mount View on Friday night. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.
