BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Sophomore point guard Jon Elmore (Charleston, W.Va.) posted his first double-double with 24 points and 10 assists in a 96-93 overtime road win at WKU on Saturday at E.A. Diddle Arena.
The Thundering Herd improved to 13-12, 9-3 in Conference USA play. It was Marshall’s first win in Bowling Green, now at 1-7 all-time. The Hilltoppers fell to 12-13, 4-8.
Elmore led the Herd in scoring, tied with senior James Kelly (Ann Arbor, Mich.). Junior Stevie Browning (Logan, W.Va.) was the only other Marshall player in double-figure scoring, with 17 points. Sophomore forward Terrence Thompson (Durham, N.C.) posted career highs of nine points and 10 rebounds.
The game was close for all 45 minutes, as neither team reached a double-figure lead. Marshall used a 12-1 run over 3:38 to reach a nine-point advantage at 9:11 in the first half, up 25-16.
Foul trouble plagued the Herd’s frontcourt, as Kelly, Ryan Taylor (Indianapolis), Thompson and Aleksandar Dozic (Podgorica, Montenegro) recorded two fouls apiece within the first 15 minutes of the game. WKU outscored Marshall 8-4 over the final three minutes of the half to cut the Herd’s lead to one, 40-39, at the break.
Just after halftime, WKU took its first lead (41-40) since the 13:09 mark in the first half (15-13). Minutes later, Marshall responded with back-to-back triples by Browning to reach a 53-50 lead at 14:07.
The teams traded leads five more times until the Hiltoppers took a largest lead of five, up 64-59, at 10:53. A 9-0 run, including seven points and a charge taken by Elmore, put the Herd back in front, 71-67, with 5:49 remaining. WKU would not be silenced, going on a 5-0 run to pull back within one, 73-72, at 4:46. With 59 seconds left, the game tied at 80, and neither club could find go-ahead points. Marshall found itself in its first overtime contest of the season.
There were three ties in overtime, and neither team had a lead larger than two until the final four seconds. After the third tie, Kelly threw down a dunk with 18 seconds to go to give the Herd a 94-92 lead.
Thompson was called for a foul at the other end, resulting in two free throw attempts by Fredrick Edmond. Edmond made one of two, and Browning grabbed the defensive rebound. He was fouled with four seconds on the clock, and made two free throws to seal Marshall’s 96-93 victory.
