MAN — The Man High School boys’ basketball team made quick work of Montcalm on Saturday night in the first round of the Class A sectional tournament as the Hillbillies rolled to a 94-43 victory over the Generals at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse.
The victory moved No. 3 seed Man (15-8) into Tuesday night’s sectional semifinal game at No. 2 seed Van (18-4) in a 7 p.m. tip.
The Hillbillies did not play Van during the regular season.
The Bulldogs are 12-2 over their last 14 games. Van had its five-game winning streak snapped over the weekend with a 62-58 loss to Independence.
The Man-Van winner will likely play at No. 1 seed Tug Valley (16-3) on Friday night in the Class A sectional championship game.
Man was led in Saturday night’s game by Josh Adkins, who tossed in 15 points and also had eight rebounds and five assists.
Erik Files added 14 points and five assists, while John Thomas Keffer and Trey Whitt tallied 13 points each. Keffer also had six assists.
Kenny Jo Adkins netted 12 points, while Jake Adkins scored eight points and pulled down 11 boards. Jake Adkins also reached 1,000 points for his career during the game.
Marquel “Gabby” Brown had seven points with 10 rebounds. Brandon Cook netted three points and Cameron Simpson had two.
Montcalm was led in scoring by Cody Farmer with 13 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double.
Trent Jenkins tallied 10, Jared Jaunutolo eight, Zack Coeburn seven, Shane Prestley three and Dakota Parnell two.
Man was 37-for-72 shooting from the floor for 51 percent. The Billies were 10-for-27 on 3-point attempts for 37 percent and also hit on 10-of-18 free throws for 55 percent.
Montcalm was 14-for-52 shooting for just 26 percent, including 4-for-26 from 3-point range for a miserable 15 percent. The Generals were 11-for-20 from the foul line for 55 percent.
The Billies raced out to a 25-4 lead after one quarter and outpaced the Generals 17-7 in the second to take a 42-11 lead. Man edged Montcalm 22-18 in the third to make it 64-29 after three. Man’s 30-14 fourth set the final score.
Man jumped out to a 9-0 lead early after a 3 by Kenny Jo Adkins, two buckets by Keffer and a pair of free throws by Josh Adkins.
Montcalm’s first points didn’t come until the 4:54 mark on a jumper by Jenkins. Man went on to take a 21-point lead after the first period of play.
Man then went on a 15-0 run to put the game away to open the second stanza.
Kenny Jo Adkins and Josh Adkins both nailed 3-pointers while Keffer scored a hoop and added two free throws as the Billies took a commanding 40-4 advantage at the 2:37 mark.
Farmer hit two baskets late in the period for the Generals as Man would take a 42-11 lead into the locker room.
Man head coach Harvey Arms began to sub as the third quarter. Whitt was able to hit a pair of 3s for the Billies.
Man’s bench tallied 52 points in the game.
Montcalm closed out the season with a 1-13 record.
