Summer Sword is off to a good start to the 2016 women’s softball season.
Sword, a junior catcher at West Virginia State University and a Man High School graduate, is hitting .318 so far this season for the 15-5 Yellow Jackets through 20 games.
Sword has appeared in 19 games and has 19 starts and is 14-for-44 at the plate with two home runs and 13 RBI with three doubles. She is 2-for-3 in stolen bases.
The Yellow Jackets most recently played last weekend in the Salem, Va., tourney and picked up a pair of wins.
West Virginia State opened the day with an 8-4 win over Ursuline as Sword led the way going 2-for-4 with a grand slam. Allyson Funk contributed three hits with Dee Dee Loftis and Nichole Brown adding two each. Zoey Carte drove in two runs.
The Yellow Jackets then beat Shippensburg 9-3 later in the day as Calli Norton and Chelsey Parkins combined to pitch the victory.
The WVSU softball team wrapped up a perfect week at the Myrtle Beach Snowball Softball Tournament in South Carolina recently with a 5-3 win over Brevard.
The Yellow Jackets won all eight games in the tournament.
West Virginia State was scheduled to host UVa-Wise in a doubleheader on Wednesday. WVSU plays at Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday for a twinbill and then play at West Liberty on Sunday for another doubleheader.
