CHARLESTON (AP) — Darhius Nunn had 18 points and 10 assists as Fairmont beat Poca 55-37 in the Class AA state championship game Saturday.
It was Fairmont Senior’s first championship since 1996, when it was a Class AAA school.
The victory avenged Fairmont Senior’s 57-53 loss to Poca in the 2015 championship game.
Like last year, Fairmont Senior started strong. This time, the Polar Bears kept it going.
Fairmont Senior (23-5) led 29-16 at the half. An 11-0 run led by Nunn in the third quarter pushed Fairmont Senior’s lead to 41-19.
Brennan Moorehead added 13 points and Zyon Dobbs scored 10 for the Polar Bears. Dante Stills had six points and 10 rebounds.
Elijah Cuffee had 20 points and 11 rebounds for Poca. Luke Frampton, who had averaged 22.5 points in two state tournament games, was held to six points.
Huntington 62 (OT)
CHARLESTON (AP) — Steven Solomon had 20 points and nine rebounds as Morgantown held off two-time defending state champion Huntington 65-62 in overtime Saturday night in the Class AAA title game.
Top-seeded Morgantown (27-0) finished off the first undefeated season in Class AAA since Stonewall Jackson in 1985.
Second-seeded Huntington (25-2) was foiled in its bid for a third straight title, which the school had accomplished from 2005 to 2007.
Kenzie Melko added 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Mohigans.
J.R. Howard’s layup with 2:32 remaining in regulation for Huntington tied the score at 54-54.
Morgantown never trailed in overtime. Solomon made a free throw with 29 seconds left for a 64-59 lead.
Howard hit a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left, but Huntington didn’t score again. Howard finished with 20 points. Tavian Dunn-Martin scored 17 and Mikal Dawson 11.
Huntington St. Joe 67,
Wheeling Central 65
CHARLESTON — In fitting fashion, on St. Patrick’s Day weekend, the St. Joe Irish have won the Class A boys state basketball championship.
No. 5 Huntington St. Joe (21-6) used a balanced effort to upset No. 2 Wheeling Central Catholic 67-65 in the Class A championship game on Saturday.
The Irish had four players score in double figures and were led by Keith Clemons’ 20. John Dawson scored 15, Jacob Strieter scored 11 and John Morrison came off the bench and scored 10.
Clemons, Morrison, Dawson and Deaundra Murphy were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Wheeling Central was led by Owen Gainer, who scored a game high 22.
Chase Harler and John Burkhalter made the All-Tournament Team for Wheeling Central.
