MAN — The Man High School baseball team lost its season opener on Thursday at home to arch rival Logan, 8-0.
Logan’s Jared Shawver hurled five scoreless innings, fanning 12 Man batters. Matthew Brown came in and shut the door, pitching two scoreless innings of his own and striking out four as they combined for a five-hitter.
Brown was the man at the plate for the Cats he went 3-for-4 and hit a solo home run off John Thomas Keffer to right center field. Chase Burnette went 2-for-3 at the plate for LHS.
The game was scoreless after three innings of play.
Man starter and lefty Jake Adkins gave up a unearned run in the top of the fourth inning to give the Cats the lead for good.
Man Coach Larry Vance then went with Cameron Simpson on the mound. Adkins gave up three hits and fanned six batters.
Logan pushed its lead to 3-0, scoring two runs off Simpson to take 3-0 advantage. Coach Vance then brought in John Thomas Keffer in the top of the fifth stanza and the Wildcats plated four runs to take a commanding 7-0 lead — the big blow being a solo shot off the bat of Brown.
The game was scoreless after three innings.
“Jake pitched well. He got out of two jams and fanned six but he had thrown 63 pitches and I had to take him out,” Coach Vance said. “Simspon struggled and they got a good lead. We committed four errors as well and Shawver held us in check with 12 strikeouts.”
The Wildcats added an insurance run in the top of the seventh off freshman Zack Cook and Brown came in for Logan and pitched two scoreless innings as well to preserve the win.
Brown led the way for Logan with three hits. Burnette had two hits and Shawver, Ryan Holstein and Tommy Adkins had one hit each.
Man, which only had five hits, got two from Simpson and one each by Seth Chapman, Keffer and Nick Collins.
Man committed four errors to none for Logan.
