Mitchell homers in Lady Cats’ win

CHAPMANVILLE — Monica Mitchell hit a two-run homer and helped lead the Logan High School softball team past Sherman, 10-5, on Saturday in the Lady Tigers Invitational at Chapmanville.

Mitchell, a four-year Class AAA all-state basketball standout at LHS, is playing in her first varsity season with the Logan softball team.

Her homer came in the first inning.

Logan (4-4) also got several other big games from other players as well.

Mahoghani Patton was 3-for-4 at the plate, while Steph Curry was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Chelsea Napier went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Brooklyn Queen was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and Kyra Wright had a double with one run knocked in.

Kelsey Ward was the starting and winning pitcher for the Lady Cats. She fired four-plus innings. Curry tossed the final three innings and was credited with the save.

Logan was scheduled to host St. Albans on Monday. LHS goes to Westside on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. game and hosts Scott on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. contest. On Thursday, Logan heads to county rival Man for a 5:30 p.m. clash.

Chapmanville 4 (10 innings)

CHAPMANVILLE — The Chapmanville Regional High School softball team lost 6-4 in 10 innings to Class AAA Point Pleasant on Saturday in its own Lady Tigers Invitational.

Chapmanville fell to 8-3 on the season and went 1-2 in the tourney.

The Lady Tigers played three Triple-A teams in the tournament, also winning 6-1 over Lincoln County last Thursday and falling 8-5 to defending state champion Hurricane on Friday.

Point Pleasant pushed four runs across in the top of the first inning off CRHS pitcher Kenzie McCann.

Chapmanville tied it at 4-all with a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Point then tallied two runs in the top of the 10th and held off CRHS in the last half of the frame to notch the win.

The Lady Tigers outhit Point 11-7. The Lady Knights had four errors in the game to three for Chapmanville.

Shian Meeks was 2-for-5 with a home run and a double for CRHS. Grace Belcher also drove in a run and Karah Little was 2-for-5 with two runs batted in.

Karissa Cochran pitched the complete-game, 10-inning win for Point Pleasant.

Michaela Cottrill went 2-for-4 with a double. Kelsie Byus had a double and an RBI. Cochran and Megan Hammond each drove in a run.
