MAN — The Man High School Lady Billies’ softball team defeated arch rival Sherman at home on Tuesday night 9-5.
Savannah McCormack and Cydnee Lambert each ripped home runs in the victory as Man improved to 12-3.
Emilee Walker got the win on the mound, fanning eight Lady Tide batters.
Man jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the home half of the second inning off Sherman starter and lefty Kaitland Jenkins.
Freshman Chelsea Vance led off with a single and Morgan Muncy laid down a bunt and a three-base error scored both Vance and Muncy for the 2-0 lead.
Savannah McCormack later blasted a solo homer to give the Lady Billies a 3-0 lead.
Sherman got a lone run off starter Walker in the top of the third inning of play.
Man plated one run in the bottom of the third off Jenkins to take a 4-1 lead as Vance scored on an error off the bat of Walker.
The Lady Tide battled back in the top of the fourth frame, scoring two runs to cut the deficit to just one run at 4-3. The first run came on a Man error to make it 4-2 and then Chole Toney got an RBI single off Walker to make it 4-3 Man.
The Lady Billies went out in order in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Haley Buzzard hit a two-out single off Walker in the top of the fifth inning but Walker then got Joshlin Cooper to ground out to end the inning.
Man then sent eight batters to the plate, scoring four runs to take an 8-3 advantage and giving Walker some breathing room.
Lambert led off by ripping a fast ball over the center field fence to give MHS a 5-3 lead.
Hunter Harvey then reached on an error and Vance then got her third hit of the game to put runners on first and second.
Muncy then laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving runners to second and third. Walker then grounded out for the second out.
McCormack then ripped a double, scoring both Vance and Harvey to give the Lady Billies a 7-3 lead. Emillee Toler then singled, scoring McCormack to give Man a commanding 8-3 advantage.
Walker held Sherman in check in the top half of the sixth inning.
The Lady Billies added another insurance run in the bottom of the sixth off Jenkins as Grace Cline led off with a solid double to the center field gap and later scoring on a Lady Tide error, giving MHS a 9-3 lead.
The Lady Tide continued to battle back in the top of the seventh frame as Nicki Santonio led off with a single. Syndey Seagrave then reached on an error and Jenkins helped her own cause with a two-run single to make it 9-5.
Walker then got Buzzard to ground out for the first out. Cooper then singled but Walker then got Sydney Ferrell to fly out and Chole Wall to ground out to preserve the victory.
McCormack was 2-for-4 in the game with a homer and a double. Toler and Vance were each 3-for-4, while Lambert was 1-for-4 with her home run.
Sydney Keffer, Walker and Harvey had one hit each for the lady Billies.
Man was scheduled to get back into action on Wednesday at River View. The Lady Billies play at Tug Valley on Thursday in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
