MAN — The Man High School baseball team finally got on the winning track Friday with a 4-2 win over the Buffalo Bison at Dr. Juan Nordelo Field in Man.
Dylan Goodman pickup the win for the Hillbillies while Ian ODonnell suffered the loss.
Man is now 3-9 on the season.
Man got on the scoreboard first scoring, three runs of O’Donnell in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead for good at 3-0.
Senior John Thomas Keffer drew a one out walk and then scored on an RBI single by Tyler Blair to give Man a 1-0 advantage. Nick Collins later ripped a two-run double to give MHS a 3-0 lead and Goodman grounded out to end the inning.
The second and third innings were scoreless.
Buffalo plated two runs in the top of the fourth frame to cut the Man deficit to 3-2 off Goodman.
Austin Starcher led off and reached on a error. Hunter Whittington then doubled and Tim Eads then walked to load the bases. Michael Haber then flew out but it was not deep enough to score Starcher for the first out.
Goodman had control problems and then walked the next two batters in Connor Fields and Nick Whittington to make it 3-2.
Man head coach Larry Vance then went to the bullpen and spelled freshman Austin Cook to the mound. Cook then fanned Dillion Williams and got Stephen Booth to fly out for the third out.
The Billies were able to get one of the runs back to push their lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth frame and that would be the final run scored of the game.
Collins led off with a walk. Zack Cook then struck out John McCoy ripped a single up the middle. Trey Whitt then fanned for the second out, but Cameron Simpson got a clutch two-out RBI single to give Man a 4-2 lead. Kenny Jo Adkins, who has been in a slump, struck out to end the rally.
Buffalo loaded the bases in the top of the fifth inning off Cook. But with two outs Cook got out of the jam by fanning Connor Fields to end the threat.
Stephen Booth was hit by a Cook pitch in the top of the sixth inning with two outs but Cook then got O’Donnell to ground out to end the inning.
Cook then sat down the Bison in order in the top of the seventh inning of play, fanning pinch hitter Tank Smith and then getting Hunter Whittington and Tim Eads to fly out to Collins in left field to preserve the win.
Man was led by Collins with a double and two RBI while Simspon and Tyler Blair each had single and an RBI. McCoy added a single.
Whittington led Buffalo with a double.
Goodman got the win while Cook got the save.
The Billies were slated to host Moorefield on Saturday. Man hosts Charleston Catholic on Monday at 6 p.m.
