Insurgent Democratic Socialist presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has made a name for himself with his “Feel the Bern” slogan.
On Monday night at Logan High School’s Roger Gertz Field, the Man Hillbillies were feeling the Burn-ette.
Burnette, Logan’s senior right-hander, torched the Billies with a complete-game one-hitter as the Wildcats won 6-2 over Man in a battle between the Logan County rivals.
Burnette pitched all seven innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out 12 while hitting one batter and walking none.
Cameron Simpson was the starting and losing pitcher, going three innings and allowed three earned runs with one strikeout and two issued walks. Jake Adkins pitched the last three innings in relief, fanning six and walking two while giving up three runs.
Logan (9-7) outhit Man 9-1. Both teams committed one error. The Billies dropped to 6-12 on the season.
Burnette also helped his own cause at the plate as he was 2-for-2 with two RBI. Alex Toler was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Devin Hensley was 2-for-3. Ryan Holstein, Jared Shawver and Tyler Topping all had hits.
Nick Collins had Man’s only hit — a one-out RBI single to center field in the top of the fifth inning to score Seth Chapman who led off by getting hit by a pitch. Chapman was Man’s first base runner and the hit by pitch broke up Burnette’s perfect game bid. Burnette had sat down the first 12 batters he faced over four innings.
Man then made it 6-2 with John McCoy’s RBI ground out to shortstop.
Logan went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the second as Topping singled and later scored on Browning’s ground out to third.
In the third, the Wildcats plated two more runs to take a 3-0 advantage. Holstein walked and later scored on Toler’s sac fly to left. Shawver singled and scored on Burnette’s RBI single.
The Wildcats plated three more runs in the fourth off relief pitcher Adkins.
Browning walked, stole second and scored on Hensley’s RBI single to center as the lead went to 4-0.
Two batters later, Toler’s RBI single upped the margin to 5-0. Burnette then ripped an RBI single to right field to make it a 6-0 ballgame.
Man then plated two runs in the fifth but it was not enough.
Logan swept the season series with the Hillbilles two games to none. LHS won 8-0 at Man in the season opener on March 24.
The Cats are scheduled to play at Van on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Logan then hosts St. Albans on Friday at 7 p.m. before going to Cabell Midland on Saturday at noon.
Man was slated to host Westside on Tuesday night. The Billies play at Lincoln County on Wednesday at 5 and head to Charleston Catholic on Friday in a 6 p.m. first pitch.
