The Man High School softball team’s possible march back to Vienna and the Class A state tournament continued on Tuesday as the Lady Billies blanked Class A regional rival Sherman 8-0 on the road at Seth.
The game was called after just five innings due to the mercy rule.
The Lady Billies, winners of four straight games and nine out of their last 10, improved to 18-4 on the season with the win. Man swept the season series with the Tide, also taking a 9-5 win earlier in the season at home.
After stranding baserunners in the first inning off walks and errors, Man started the second inning with hits from the freshman duo of Allie Meade and Chelsie Vance.
Senior second baseman Savannah McCormack then singled to center field and picked up two of her three RBIs for the game.
In the top half of the third, senior first baseman Cydnee Lambert was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior center fielder Grace Cline. Lambert ultimately scored when Meade added her second hit of the contest — a single to left field.
Sophomore pitcher Emilee Walker reached safely on an error and Vance answered next with a triple to the left side that scored Meade and courtesy runner Shauntae Miller.
In the bottom of the third, Sherman had their lone hit of the game as senior shortstop Nikki Santonio cracked a single to short center with two outs. She was left stranded when freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Jenkins popped out to second base to end the inning.
The Lady Billies kept things rolling in the top of the fourth inning when junior catcher Sydney Keffer legged out an infield single. Lambert then came up big for Man, driving a rocket over the center field fence for a home run, giving Man a 7-0 advantage.
The final run for Man came in the fifth inning when Walker got a free pass and McCormack followed with a double to center, scoring courtesy runner Haylee Daniels.
Walker got the win on the mound for the Lady Billies, going five innings, striking out nine, walking six and allowing just one hit.
The Man defense also played an error free game. Jenkins took the loss for Sherman, giving up three walks and allowing nine hits and fanning one batter.
The Lady Billies were scheduled to host Scott on Wednesday, weather permitting. Man hosts Logan on Thursday and Buffalo on Friday. Game times are set for 5:30 p.m.
