Chapmanville baseball wins home twinbill

CHAPMANVILLE — The Chapmanville Regional High School baseball team picked up a pair of wins on Friday evening at home.

The Tigers, ranked No. 3 in the state in Class AA, downed Roane County, 3-1, then took a 6-2 victory over Independence in the nightcap at Chapmanville’s Ted Ellis Field.

Chapmanville (21-3) trailed Roane County 1-0 but scored three runs in the last half of the sixth inning and then held the Raiders scoreless in the top of the seventh to get the win.

Alex Berry was the starting and winning pitcher for the Tigers. He allowed just one run on three hits and struck out six in 6.2 innings of work. Josh Zigmond then got the last out for the save.

Zigmond had two hits for CRHS. Chris Bailey also knocked in a run.

The Tigers outhit Roane 5-3 and committed no errors. The Raiders had three errors.

In the win over Independence, Bailey hurled the complete game win on the mound. He allowed just two runs and three hits while striking out 10. Bailey also helped his own cause by crushing a two-run homer.

Berry, Zigmond and Josh Bazzilla each drove in a run for the Tigers. Zigmond was 2-for-3 with a double. Jacob Dingess was 3-for-4 at the plate.

Ryan Brandstetter had an RBI double to lead the Patriots.

The Tigers outhit Independence 9-3 and had no errors. The Patriots had one error.

CRHS hosts Herbert Hoover on Monday at 7 p.m.

Charleston Catholic 3,

Man 2

The Man High School baseball team dropped to 7-13 on the season with Friday night’s 3-2 loss at Charleston Catholic in extra innings.

The Irish won it in the bottom of the eighth with Michael Martin’s RBI single.

Charleston Catholic outhit Man 6-5. Brandon Combs had two hits, including a double and an RBI to lead the Irish. John Hufford also had an RBI.

Austin Gent was 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Hillbillies.

Man was slated to host Fayetteville on Saturday. The Billies travel to Belfry (Ky.) on Monday at 7 p.m.
