MAN — The Man High School softball team toppled struggling Logan 2-1 on Thursday night at Man as the Lady Billies’ Sydney Keffer ripped a double off the right field fence in the bottom of the third inning to break a 1-1 tie.
It stood as the Lady Bilies improved to 19-4 on the season and earned a season series split with the Lady Cats. Logan won 8-0 at home on April 7 in the previous meeting.
Logan dropped to 15-15 with the loss. The Lady Cats are just 2-8 over their last 10 games.
Man’s Emilee Walker went the distance on the mound to record the win. She tossed a two-hitter and struck out five batters.
Man took an early 1-0 lead off Logan pitcher Hana Sedlock in the home half of the first inning as Keffer reached on a two-out walk and later scored on an RBI double off the bat of Cydnee Lambert.
Man was able to turn two double plays in the first two innings of play.
Logan then tied the game up in the top of the third frame off Walker. Mahoghani Patton got hit by a pitch and later scored on a Man error to make it 1-1.
Then in the bottom of the third inning, Keffer just missed a homer as the ball hit off the top of the fence for a double, scoring Savannah McCormack to give MHS the lead for good.
The Lady Cats hit the ball hard but line drives went right at Man defensive players.
Walker fanned two Logan batters in the top of the fourth inning and then got Khyra Wright to pop up for the third out.
Logan then made a pitching change in the bottom of the fourth inning, bringing in Steph Curry.
Grace Cline led off with a single but was stranded.
Logan got two base runners on with two outs on a hit batter and a Man error but Walker then got Chelsea Napier to pop up to end the rally.
Man went out in order in the bottom of the fifth.
Walker then got the Lady Cats out in order in the top of the sixth inning.
The Lady Billies went out quietly in their home half of the sixth inning off Curry.
After issuing a leadoff walk, Walker then got Sedlock out on a line drive to Maddy Paynter in left field and then got Curry to pop up for the second out. She then got Brooklyn Queen out with a pop up to second base to preserve the 2-1 victory.
Keffer led Man at the plate with a double and the game winning RBI. Lambert had a double and an RBI. McCormack and Cline both added singles.
Logan’s two hits came off the bat of Curry.
Man and Logan are set to begin play in the sectional tournament this week. Logan’s regular season finale is Monday at Sherman in a 5:30 p.m. ballgame.
