Wildcats drill Van Bulldogs 13-1

Chase Burnette and Jared Shawver combined to toss a one-hitter as the Logan High School baseball team drilled the Van Bulldogs 13-1 on Tuesday night at Logan’s Roger Gertz Field.

Burnette started and went three innings, striking out four and allowing no runs and no hits. Shawver, a senior left-hander, then fired the last two innings and allowed one hit and one unearned run with five strikeouts.

The game was stopped after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Logan (11-8) tallied one run in the bottom of the first, five in the second, two in the third and five in the fourth.

The Wildcats pounded out 12 hits in the win. Van had two errors to just one for LHS.

Will Akers led Logan at the plate as he was 3-for-3 with four RBI. Devin Hensley was 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI. Alex Toler and Tyler Browning both were 2-for-3.

Tyler Topping, Ryan Holstein and T.Jay Mullins all had singles.

Greg Lail broke up a no-hitter with a double in the fifth inning for Van.

Logan is scheduled to play at Lincoln County on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The Cats host Ripley on Friday at 7 and Hurricane on Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the regular season finale.

Logan’s three-team Class AAA sectional begins on May 12 as Nitro plays at St. Albans. Logan then travels to Nitro on May 13 and hosts St. Albans on May 14. The first two games have 6:30 p.m. starting times. The third game will be played at a time to be announced later.
