ST. ALBANS — The 2016 season came to an end for the Logan High School baseball team on a chilly, drizzly evening on Saturday night at St. Albans High School’s Loftis Field as the Wildcats lost 2-1 to the host Red Dragons.

Logan closed out the season at 12-10 and finished a disappointing 0-2 in the Class AAA Region 4 Section 2 tournament.

Logan opened sectional play last Friday with a 14-2 blowout loss at home to No. 3-ranked Nitro.

St. Albans (16-18) moved on to play at Nitro (18-10) on Monday, having already lost 13-0 last Thursday to the Wildcats in the sectional tournament.

St. Albans sophomore catcher Cameron Bryant’s two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the second inning was the difference as the Red Dragons took a 2-0 lead against Logan.

Logan, which only had two hits in the game, managed to plate one run in the top of the sixth but that was as close as the Wildcats could get as St. Albans held on for the win and eliminated LHS.

St. Albans had five hits in the game and committed three errors. Logan had one error.

The Red Dragons were led by freshman pitcher Nick Loftis, who tossed a complete-game two-hitter. He struck out six.

Chayce Matheny led St. Albans at the plate as he was 2-for-2 including a double.

Matthew Brown was Logan’s starting pitcher. He was relieved by Chase Burnette.

The Red Dragons need to beat Nitro twice to claim the sectional title. A win on Monday over Nitro would force a winner-take-all final on Tuesday.

Saturday’s game was the final prep contest for Logan’s senior players Ryan Holstein, Burnette, Alex Toler and Jared Shawver, who pitched in Friday’s game against Nitro.

The game was Logan’s final one as a Class AAA school. LHS heads back down to Class AA ball and will rejoin the Cardinal Conference in 2017.

Logan last won a state championship in 2008 — its previous season in Double-A. LHS hasn’t made it to the state tournament since 2009.
