The dust had hardly cleared on the softball diamonds at Fayetteville and Sissonville on Thursday night and the Man and Chapmanville high school softball teams were already grabbing smartphones and seeing who they would play in next week’s state tournament in Vienna.

Man (24-5), which defeated Fayetteville 2-1 on Thursday night in the Class A Region 3 championship game, is matched up with Region 2 champ Moorefield in next Wednesday’s state tourney opener around 11:30 a.m.

Chapmanville (29-5), a 6-3 winner on Thursday night at Class AA defending state champion Sissonville in the 2A Region 4 final, is scheduled to open play against Region 1 champion Oak Glen this coming Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the state tournament.

The state tourney will once again be played at Jackson Memorial Park in Vienna, a Parkersburg suburb.

Chapmanville is making its first state tournament appearance in five years. Man is making its second straight trip to state.

Also in the Class AA state tourney field is James Monroe and Petersburg. Those two teams will play 30 minutes following the conclusion of the Chapmanville-Oak Glen game.

If Chapmanville wins its opening game it would play around 7 p.m. on Wednesday against the James Monroe-Petersburg winner. The losers of the first two games will meet at 5 p.m. in an elimination game.

The state tourney is a double-elimination format.

A loser’s bracket game would then be played next Thursday at 10 a.m. with the 2A state championship game set for 2:30 p.m. A second final would then follow if necessary.

In the Single-A state tourney field, Wheeling Central and Williamstown are set to meet at 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday in the opener with Man-Moorefield to follow.

The two winners are then slated to play around 6:30 p.m. The two losers play at 4:45 p.m. in an elimation game.

A loser’s bracket game would then be played at 9:45 a.m. on Thursday with the Class A state title game to be played at 2:15 p.m. A second final would then follow if necessary.

This is Man’s last year as a Class A school as the Lady Billies are headed back up next season to Double-A for the first time in more than a decade. Man won Class A state titles in 2008 and 2009 and were the state runner-ups in 2010.

Chapmanville has won five state championships in its history in 1999, 2004, 2007, 2009 and 2010. The last three were under the Chapmanville Regional banner following the opening of the new high school.

Wheeling Park, Hurricane, Musselman and Ripley are the four advancing teams in the Triple-A state tourney field.
