Billies beat Sherman, advance in regionals

SETH — The Man High School baseball team is just one win away from a trip to the West Virginia State Tournament.

The Billies defeated the Sherman Tide, 5-2, on the road Tuesday night at Sherman High School in Seth in the Class A regional semifinals.

Man (11-16) will now play host Greater Beckley Christain on Thursday night at Man’s Dr. Juan Nordelo Field in the regional championship game. Man played Greater Beckley Christian twice this season, losing 4-1 at home and then falling 10-2 on the road.

In the win over the Tide, Man took an early 4-0 lead, scoring four times in the top of the second inning.

Seth Chapman led off with a walk. Tyler Blair singled and Nick Collins got hit by a pitch to load the bases up with no outs.

Austin Gent then delivered an RBI single to give Man a 1-0 advantage.

Dylan Goodman reached on an error, scoring two more runs to make it 3-0.

John McCoy then got a sacfice to give MHS a 4-0 lead. Cameron Simpson then fanned for the second out and Keny Jo Adkins flew out to end the inning.

Jake Adkins then got Sherman out in order in the bottom of the second inning.

Man plated its final run in the top of the third stanza on an RBI single off the bat of Tyler Blair.

Sherman cut the Man deficit to 5-2, scoring two times off Man releiver Dylan Goodman in the bottom of the fourth frame.

John Thomas Keffer came in an pitched three strong innings before giving over the baseball to Cameron Simpson in the bottom of the seventh inning with runners on first and second with one out, Simpson then fanned Donnie Barker for the second out.

Jacob Barnett got a single to load the bases but Simpson fanned Bailey Kirk for the final out to preserve the win for the Billies.
