CRHS releases first soccer schedule

CHAPMANVILLE — The brand new Chapmanville Regional High School soccer team will soon kick off its first ever season.

Head coach Greg Dillon and the Tigers have released their inaugural 2016 soccer schedule and are excited about starting up a new tradition at CRHS as the county’s pilot prep program.

It all is set to begin Aug. 13 at home as Chapmanville is scheduled to host the preseason Soccer Rama on the Tiger Stadium Field Turf. Action is set to begin at 8 a.m.

The regular season opener is set for Aug. 20 at home against Tug Valley, which is also fielding a soccer team for the first time ever. Kickoff for that one is slated for 6 p.m.

Chapmanville is also scheduled to face off with Cardinal Conference teams Nitro, Poca, Herbert Hoover, Scott and Mingo Central as well as Double-A team Lincoln County and Single-A Parkersburg Catholic.

The Tigers will play a pair of Kentucky teams in Shelby Valley and Pike Central as well as WVCEA Christian association schools Calvary Baptist and Teays Valley Christian.

Mingo Central’s boys’ soccer team went 6-9-3 last year, while Scott was a respectable 12-7-3. The Herbert Hoover Huskies were 15-5-3. Parkersburg Catholic also had a successful season a year ago with a 10-5-4 mark. The Poca Dots, however, went just 3-12-4 last year.

Nitro’s soccer team had an outstanding season a year ago as a Class AAA school as the Wildcats went 16-4-2. Lincoln County, also playing in the 3A ranks last year, was just 3-13-2.

Just like tennis, the WVSSAC splits its soccer teams into two divisions — Class AAA and a combined Class AA/A.

Last fall, Fairmont Senior won the Class AA/A boys’ state championship match with a 3-2 win over Charleston Catholic.

The Nitro boys have one state championship in its school history back in 1990. The Nitro girls took the state title in 2008.

The WVSSAC has sanctioned a state soccer tournament since 1988.

The Chapmanville soccer team has been practicing since Monday as part of the June three-week practice period.

The Tigers will field a co-ed team this fall open to boys and girls and will compete in the boys’ division.
