Logan, Chapmanville advance in Little League tournament

Just four teams are remaining in the District 2 11-12-year-old Little League baseball tournament at Logan’s Paul Hale Field as Logan and Chapmanville advanced.

Logan beat Tug Valley 3-1 and Chapmanville downed county rival Man 13-3. Both Tug Valley and Man were knocked out of the double-elimination tournament.

In the Logan/Tug Valley game, Logan plated one run in the first inning with Chad Burnette’s RBI double. Then in the second, Jarred Burnette and Trey Brown both knocked in runs with RBI doubles as Logan took a 3-0 lead.

Tug Valley looked to rally in the sixth inning as Dakota Ooten drove in a run with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-1. Tug Valley had the potential game-tying runs on first and third but Logan pitcher Jarred Burnette was able to get a ground out to end the game.

Brown was the starting and winning pitcher for Logan as he retired 10 out of 11 batters he faced before being taken out of the game. Justin Hall was the losing pitcher for Tug Valley.

Tug Valley finished 0-2 in the tournament. TV lost 2-0 to Man back in Saturday in the first day of the tourney.

In the Chapmanville/Man game, Man jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning after RBI hits by A.J. Gore and Jaden Brown.

Chapmanville’s Tyson Thompson then came on to pitch in relief and put out the fire, striking out nine batters and getting the win.

Chapmanville plated five runs in the bottom of the first to take a 5-3 lead, then scored four more runs in the second, two in third and two more in the fourth as the Chapmanville All-Stars scored the final 13 runs in the game.

Trey Butcher went 4-for-4 at the plate with four RBI to lead Chapmanville. Evan Plumley was 3-for-3, Caleb Whitt went 2-for-2 with an RBI and Thompson had a hit and an RBI. Jordan Hayes also had a pair of hits and two RBI.

Colton Miller led the way for Man with two hits.

The 11-12-year-old tournament was scheduled to continue on Tuesday night as Madison was slated to play Pineville in the District 2 championship game for the right to play in the upcoming state tournment.

Logan and Chapmanville was slated to play in an elimination game on Tuesday night.

The Logan/Chapmanville winner moves on to play the Pineville/Madison loser on Wednesday night in the runner-up game for the second state tournament berth.

* In the 9-10-year-old State Little League Tournament at Tygarts Valley, the Man All-Stars were eliminated on Monday with a 13-5 loss to Bridgeport.

Man had defeated Madison 11-10 earlier in the day to advance.

Madison was also eliminated with the loss to Man. Madison was the District 2 champions and Man was the district runner-ups.

Man had earlier defeated Central Greenbrier 12-4 last Friday and lost 8-5 to Martinsburg last Saturday.

Man closed out with a 2-2 mark in the state tournament.
