New teams on Billies’ hoop schedule

MAN — It will be a new era for the Man High School boys’ basketball team next season as the Hillbillies head up to Double-A for the first time in more than a decade.

And with that comes new opponents.

Man just released its 2016-17 hoop schedule and the Billies will be playing some new teams.

Headlining Man’s schedule is a home-and-home series with county rival Logan. The Logan-Man basketball series was shelved several years ago.

The Wildcats, coached by new mentor Zach Green, are slated to host Man on Jan. 24, then play at Man in the regular season finale on Feb. 24.

Logan has won the last 12 meetings over the Hillbillies. The Wildcats went 2-0 against Man during the 2007-08 season — the last time the two teams met — taking 87-69 and 84-63 wins.

Logan is dropping in classification to Class AA this season.

Also new to Man’s roundball schedule are Lincoln County, Sissonville and Oak Hill.

Man is slated to take part in three tournaments; the annual Bob Runyon Memorial Holiday Tournament Dec. 22-23 at Chapmanville; Jan. 21 at the Hatfield-McCoy Shootout at Williamson; and Feb. 6 at the Little General Shootout at the Charleston Civic Center.

Man lost 77-71 to host Chapmanville in last year’s Bob Runyon championship game. The Billies played in the Little General Shootout last year, routing Paden City 57-36. Man also played in last year’s Hatfield-McCoy Shootout, rolling over Betsy Layne (Ky.), 88-53.

The Billies are set to open the season Dec. 13 at Mount View. The home opener is two nights later against Lincoln County, a school dropping from 3A to 2A this school year.

Coach Harvey Arms’ Billies were 15-9 last year in their final season in Single-A. Man destroyed Montcalm 94-43 in the Class A sectionals but were ousted by Van, 63-55 in the second round.

Man is set to take part in a difficult new Class AA sectional tournament with county rivals Logan and Chapmanville as well as Scott, Mingo Central and Lincoln County.

The Billies will have some rebuilding to do as seniors and 1,000-point career scorers John Thomas Keffer and Jake Adkins have both graduated. Seniors Kenny Jo Adkins, Gabby Brown and Josh Adkins will also be lost.
