Lady Cats to face new foes

By Paul Adkins - [email protected]

As Logan High School moves back into the Cardinal Conference for the upcoming season there will be many new opponents for the LHS girls’ basketball team in their new Double-A world.

Logan will no longer play longstanding Triple-A rivals such as Spring Valley, Huntington, Morgantown, St. Albans and others.

With the Cardinal Conference splitting into North and South divisions Logan is scheduled to play home-and-home series with South Division foes Chapmanville, Mingo Central, Wayne and Scott.

The Lady Cats will then play single games against North Division opponents Herbert Hoover, Nitro, Winfield, Poca and Sissonville.

Like Logan, Nitro and Winfield will be joining the newly expanded 10-team league.

The Lady Cats played some of those teams last year, splitting with Chapmanville and falling to Winfield.

Logan, 7-15 last year, will also have a home-and-home non-conference series against former Class AAA school Lincoln County.

Logan also has home-and-homes against 3A Princeton and Tolsia, a former Cardinal Conference school which is dropping down to Single-A this season. Logan beat Tolsia 66-64 last year in the only meeting between the two schools.

Also on Logan’s 2016-17 schedule are a matchup on Dec. 17 in the Big Ten/Cardinal Conference shootout and a home game on Jan. 28 against 3A East Fairmont in Logan’s King Coal Classic. In addition, LHS is set to face River View on Feb. 6 in the Little General Shootout at the Charleston Civic Center.

Logan, coached by Kevin Gertz, was ousted 65-29 by Huntington in last year’s 3A sectionals.

The Lady Cats will play in a new Class AA sectional this season with county rivals Chapmanville and Man as well as league foes Scott and Mingo Central and also Lincoln County.

Logan is not scheduled to play Man during the regular season. Man is moving up to 2A status this season.

LHS opens the season Dec. 5 at home against Herbert Hoover.
