Only days after the preseason practices began a couple of weeks ago the Logan High School football team had a huge setback.
Senior starting lineman Caleb McDonald (6-0, 300) went down with a knee injury.
McDonald was Logan’s only starter back on the offensive line and was expected to start for the Wildcats at the all-important center position.
“He would have been our center and would have played on defense, too,” Logan coach Gary Mullins said. “That’s a big loss for us.”
In the days since, Logan has been scrambling trying to find a replacement for McDonald.
Senior Chris Watkins (5-11, 235) is one of the candidates to fill in.
Sophomores Jordan Brineger (5-8, 215) and Chris Childers (5-11, 215) are the other vying for the spot.
“We have Chris Watkins who is in there and is another senior,” Mullins said. “We also have Jordan Brineger and Chris Childers, one of the new guys that we have out. We’re moving some guys in. The way that we operate is that when someone gets hurt we just have someone ready to step in.
“We’ll be OK, we will just go to the next guy. Injuries happen in football.”
Logan scrimmaged against Tug Valley and Paintsville (Ky.) on Saturday night at Tug Valley High School in Naugatuck.
Chapmanville Regional High School had a preseason game at Valley Fayette, while Man High School scrimmaged at George Washington, both on Saturday morning.
The preseason Cardinal Conference Gridorama is set for Saturday at Scott High School in Madison.
