BRADSHAW, W.Va. — The Man High School football team is on a roll to say the least.
The Hillbillies have now posted three straight wins after a season opening loss to Logan — two in overtime — including Friday night’s 7-0 OT win at River View.
Man improved to 3-1 on the season with the win.
The Billies entered the night in a three-way tie for 15th in the Class AA ratings released by the WVSSAC this week.
“Our defense played outstanding,” Man coach Harvey Arms said. “It was a tough game. The offense moved the ball well but we couldn’t put it in the end zone until we had to. We had one touchdown called back in the first half as Cam Simpson ran one in from about 60 yards out but a motion penalty cost us. But our defense was the key. Our entire defense played well especially up front, led by freshman Brock Muncy, with 14 tackles and Seth Chapman, Kayne Brown, D.J. Browning and Austin Bragg all had big games.”
Man got indside the red zone four times but just could not punch it in.
Seth Chapman got what proved to be the game winning touchdown in overtime as Man scored on just three plays in the extra period, capped off by a 2-yard run by Chapman. Sophomore Zack Cook booted the PAT to give MHS a 7-0 lead.
River View then got a shot to score but the Man defense, which stepped up all night long, stopped the Raiders on their first two plays and then Billies’ tackles Kayne Brown then stripped River View’s quarterback of the ball to end the game and give the Billies the hard fought 7-0 win.
Man is Idle this week and then travels to Lincoln County next week. Then it’s on to Chapmanville.
The Man defense held the Raiders to just 128 yards of total offense and just five first downs on the night.
Simpson was 9 of 20 passing for 114 yards.
The Billies had 99 yards rushing on 39 carries.
Freshman Zack Frye had 41 yards on nine carries, while Simpson had 37 yards on 13 tries.
Freshman Dylan Morris had 14 yards on nine attempts.
Man’s Trey Whitt had three catches for 60 yards. Freshman Quentin Moody had one grab for 20 yards.
Muncy led all tacklers with 14 followed closely by senior Tyler Blair with 12. Seth Osborne had 10 tackles while Bragg, Chapman and Frye had seven tackles each. Brown had five tackles and a QB sack in ovetime to preserve the Man win.
Blair also had a blocked punt and Seth Osborne had a blocked field goal.
Frye had a fumble recovery and D.J. Browning added a QB sack for the Billies.
