Pirates make Logan soccer walk the plank

The Belfry (Ky.) Pirates made the Logan High School soccer team walk the plank with Saturday morning’s 6-1 win over the Wildcats at the Belfry Soccer Complex in Goody, Ky.

Logan dropped to 4-8-1 on the season and lost its third straight match.

The Wildcats are 2-5 over their last seven matches.

The Pirates split the season series with Logan, also losing a 1 to nil decision on Sept. 17 at Logan Stadium.

“You could tell they came out with the attack mode on,” Logan coach Jay Trump said of Belfry. “When the Pirates came to our home town of Logan we surprised them to hold them 80 percent of the game at 0-0. They were prepared and we were in shock. At the 20-minute mark the score was 0-0 then we conceded one goal. With them on the charge they came down into the goalie box and Dino Noe was there to stop them. The referee called a penalty on our goalie, giving them a penalty shot on goal and they capitalized on it. That put them up 2-0 at halftime.”

Belfry then coasted the rest of the way.

“We were shorthanded,” Trump said. “It was a great second half but we had some injuries on the team and Walker Jeffery was feeling under the weather which put us down three starting players.”

Jeffery scored Logan’s lone goal.

“Even though he was at half speed a pass from Noe to Vinson to Jeffery gave us our only goal of the day. We had a couple of attempts but they don’t count unless they hit the back of the net,” Trump said.

Logan is scheduled to host Mingo Central on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

“I have to say I’m proud of the team so far,” Trump said. “We’ve had a very hard schedule this season playing the best teams in the state with Winfield being number one and Nitro being the one of the top three teams in the state. We have not backed down. You have to give credit where credit is due. This is the first soccer team we’ve ever had at this school and the kids have taken everything we have tossed at them and they haven’t quit.”
