County football title on the line

CHAPMANVILLE, W.Va. — The county football championship will be on the line on Friday night as Chapmanville hosts Man.

Man (4-1) comes into the game ranked No. 12 in the state in Class AA, while Chapmanville (4-2) is 16th.

Chapmanville is 1-0 in county play so far this season after knocking off Logan 29-8 a couple of weeks ago.

Man is 0-1 with a 48-13 loss to Logan in the opener.

If Chapmanville is able to beat the Hillbillies on Friday night the Tigers will go 2-0 and win the county title outright.

The Tigers are looking for their third straight county championship and seventh overall.

If Man beats Chapmanville all three teams will split for the county title with identical 1-1 marks. The last time that happened was 2006. There was also a three-way tie in 2003.

Since the trio of county teams began playing each other on a yearly basis in 2001 and have competed for the traveling county championship trophy, Man has just one outright crown in 2004.

Logan also has six county titles.

CRHS coach Rob Dial said Friday’s game with the Billies will be tough.

“It’s sort of a repeat of last year with two teams ranked in the top 20,” Dial said. “Both have good records and both are fighting for a county championship. We make it a goal and a priority to win the county championship each year here at Chapmanville. We certainly look forward to coming out there and competing for it and bringing it back to Chapmanville once again.”

Chapmanville won the county title last year with wins over Logan (43-26) and Man (35-28).

Two years ago, the Tigers took the crown with a pair of overtime wins over Logan (48-42) and Man (26-20) in two OTs.
