A man arrested in Chapmanville on August 29 was found to be a fugitive from Indiana.
Claude C. Rice, 36, of Chapmanville, was arrested and charged with being a fugitive from justice, public intoxication, obstructing an officer and disorderly conduct by Chapmanville Police Department’s Sgt. D.J. Miller.
According to the criminal complaint, Miller was responding to a call from 911 about a “signal 10” (drunk) male who was trying to kick in doors at the Bledsoe Apartments. Upon arrival at the scene, Miller located Rice on some stairs adjacent to the complex. Miller reports that Rice was “cussing and screaming loudly… was highly intoxicated… holding a half empty bottle of vodka.” He also reports that Rice came charging at him. When Miller advised Rice to calm down and he refused to do so, Miller was placed on the ground and handcuffed.
A check on Rice found that he was a wanted fugitive from Indiana with a full extradition and a note stating that Rice had violent tendencies.
Rice is being held in the Southwestern Regional Jail on a $1,000 bond. The fugitive charge will be handled in court when a fugitive warrant is received from the arresting office.
• Jesse Roger Hughes Jr., 38, of Holden, was allegedly clocked at doing 80 mph in a 55 mph speed zone on Rt. 73 on August 23 by City of Logan Patrolman Mark Dickerson.
According to the complaint, Dickerson was conducting a stationary radar check when he observed the Jeep Cherokee doing a high rate of speed.
Upon doing a traffic stop on the vehicle, Dickerson asked Hughes for his license, registration and insurance information. Hughes allegedly replied that he had his license, but did not have a registration or insurance.
Upon doing a Terry Frisk on Hughes, Dickerson located a “small round object in the left front pant pocket.” Upon removing the object with Hughes consent, Dickerson allegedly found a “small pill container with two types of pills inside with no valid prescription.” The pills were identified as 10 oblong peach colored Xanax .5mg and five blue oblong Xanax 1mg.
Further investigation by Dickerson found that the license plate on the vehicle had been reported stolen to the West Virginia State Police on July 6 and that Hughes’ operators had been suspended for unpaid citations.
Hughes was arrested and charged with speeding 80/55, no insurance, transferring/receiving stolen property, possession of a controlled substance x 2 and driving suspended (misc.).
