Those who enjoy reading the outdoors column each Sunday in The Logan Banner will be glad to know that Bob Fala has compiled a best of those columns, along with columns published in other media outlets, into a book.
“‘Ramblin’ Outdoors’ is a collection of 39 varying outdoor/wildlife stories,” said Fala. “Many are from the Logan Banner over the last 25 years, photographs from the Logan Banner files including horn-locking deaths — bucks fighting battles to the death in Chief Logan State Park.”
Fala’s writings are not just about deer, his columns embrace all aspects of wildlife and the outdoors. A certified wildlife biologist, Fala has worked in wildlife conservation since 1975.
“It’s been a pleasure for me to write for The Logan Banner,” said Fala. “I started out 25 years ago on the soapbox, writing about poaching, littering, forest fires and free roaming dogs and cats that are killing a lot of our wildlife. It’s really gratifying that people have really turned the page on conservation. They have done a great job on promoting conservation and getting us to a place where we now the envy of the country with our trophy deer. We have a lot of bear, a great turkey population, and now, according to the governor, we have prospects of elk.”
‘Ramblin’ Outdoors’ is almost 200 pages and contains more than 100 photographs.
“There are stories on deer, bear, turkey, grouse, trout and bass and some on ginseng,” said Fala. “There are photographs of several familiar faces, several stories on local folks and others just from wonderful West Virginia… some stuff from West Virginia Game and Fish and some stuff that just never was published.”
