A college education, one of the tickets to the American Dream, is gradually but surely sliding out of reach for many.

Nationally, the average cost of attending one year at a four-year, public college, in state, is $20,100. The average at a four-year private college is $39,800. Between 2000-01 and 2010-11, prices for undergraduate tuition, room and board at public institutions rose 42 percent. …

While the cost of college is outpacing inflation (and has for many years), state support of higher education is going backward, shifting more of the burden onto students and parents whose incomes aren’t keeping up. …

Colleges should get more competitive on their costs, and take a business-oriented examination of their expenses. …

And parents, high school guidance counselors and college counselors should work together in a holistic approach to prepare for the costs without crippling themselves with debt. That includes education about college savings from birth, as well as getting started on it, taking advantage of new college experiences, including two-year colleges and online, and spreading the message among students and parents that high school counts and getting great grades and experiences there opens the doors to more financial aid.
