LAKE — The Lake Volunteer Fire Department has received a generous donation from a Virginia based coal company and one of its subsidiaries.
According to Chief George Underwood, the $20,000 donation was used to purchase helmets, gloves, lights for coats and helmets, and training material.
“That funding was a blessing to us,” said Underwood. “Our department is a rural department and was in need of the materials. Members of the department have used the lights in smoke training and firefighting situations and they performed very well.”
Training Officer Freelin Berry said the training material was a great benefit to the department. “The donation has allowed me to purchase both hands on and classroom training material to better train our firefighters,” said Berry.
Bobby Boehm, department Safety Officer, made it well aware that the helmet lights and coat lights have been a tremendous help while inside fighting house fires.
“While inside a heavy smoke filled Garrett Fork home, these lights held up great to the elements of the heat, water and the falling debris,” said Boehm.
“The Lake Volunteer Fire Department would like thank Brooks Run West mining subsidiary and the Virginia based operation for its assistance,” said Underwood.
