The Logan High School volleyball team fell Tuesday night at home to Mingo Central at Logan’s Willie Akers Arena.
The Lady Cats (6-11) won the first set 25-22 but then dropped three straight to the Miners, 25-18, 25-22, 25-23.
“Even though we didn’t pull out the win, I’m still very pleased with the way they played and as a coach that is all you can ask for,” Logan coach Chelsey Stockdale said. “The first game they came out strong and played as a team and were talking and I really expected to win every game. They went out on the floor and got their momentum early and they kept it going throughout. The other three games, they just couldn’t pull out the win. I don’t know what happened because we were talking and playing as a team and made some awesome plays, but we just couldn’t pull ahead.”
Stockdale, however, said some of her netters played very well.
“Aarron Ward was on in each game with her serves,” she said. “(Rachelle) Toppings, one of our seniors, did excellent at the net for us and did a great job with her serves. She really stepped up her game for us. Ronni Vance, our other senior, really helped out all over the court. She had great passes and hits and really stepped up and became the leader on the floor. Some other key players were Katelyn Grimmett, a junior, who did great at the net and just seemed to find every open spot there was on the other side.”
Logan’s JV team also lsot 25-17, 25-21 to Mingo Central on Tuesday night.
“They played well and as a team,” Coach Stockdale said. “This is the best they have done all season. It was nice to see the get so excited when they were doing well and when they would get a point. Each girl did great while being in the game. Hannah Workman really came out of her shell this game and did great at the net. Abby Kirk and Shelby Hall really stepped up their game too.”
On Thursday night at Wyoming East, Logan swept to wins over the host Warriors and Bluefield.
The Lady Cats defeated Bluefield 25-18, 25-16, then got past Wyoming East, 25-22, 25-14.
“The girls really played one of their best games against Bluefield. They hustled after every ball and communicated with each other,” Coach Stockdale said. “I was very pleased with them. Herrera played, in my opinion, her best game yet. She was on at the net all night. Every time she hit or tipped the ball, she found the open spot and was just unstoppable. Our only freshman on the team, Hanna Workman, saw some playing time and did a nice job for us. She had some good passes and played well at the net. Some other players who did well tonight were Hannah Hunter, a sophomore. Her spikes have improved tremendously and it really showed last night in the game. Haley Meade saw some playing time as well and she had a good night. Her serve shook the other team up. Most teams are expecting the hard over-hand serves, so when Haley served it made the other team have to adjust because she has a under-hand serve that usually goes right over the net and then just drops. It worked for us and we racked up some points off of her serve.”
Stockdale said it was a nail-biter against East.
“It was going back and forth with every volley. We would pull ahead and then Wyoming East would catch back up,” she said. “It was a good game though. The fans were cheering for our girls and our girls were really pumped up. Aarron Ward’s serve in this game was unstoppable. Wyoming really had a hard time passing her serve up. Toppings’ serve was on in this game to and they had trouble passing it up as well. Grimmett, a junior, did really well at the net and knew when to hit and when to tip it. Same goes with Ronni Vance, she knew when to change it up and tip it. She looked for the open spot and she put the ball there. Another key played in the game was Lauren Ellis. She plays back row the hole time, and she really had some great digs. She is definitely a key player in our back row every game we play. You can always count on her to be there and can count on her to pass it up to our setters. If we keep playing like we have been, I know we can continue to win more games.”
The Lady Cats play East again at home on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Logan then goes to Chapmanville on Thursday.
Man falls
to Buffalo
The Man High School volleyball team dropped to 12-4 on the season by going 1-2 in a quad match on Thursday night at Buffalo.
The Lady Billies lost 2-0 to Teays Valley Christian, 25-15, 25-18, then lost 2-1 to Buffalo, 25-23, 23-25, 22-25. Man closed out with a 2-1 victory over the Poca Dots, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22.
“Freshmen Hannah Harvey and Tiffany Belcher attacked the ball real well last night and Abby Lusk played her best volleyball of the season,” Man coach Orlando Washington said. “Those were a few bright spots that we had last night.”
The Lady Billies are scheduled to get back into action on Tuesday in a tri-match at River View against the host Raiders and Westside.
