PACOLET, S.C. — Freda Bailey Hammonds, 81, wife of the late Billy Ray Hammonds, went home to be with the Lord Monday, November 12, 2012.


Born January 5, 1931, in Boone County, she was a daughter of the late James Elbert and Lorraine Blankenship Bailey. Also preceding her in death were two sons, Auther Lee Hammonds and Samuel Hammonds; a daughter, Ida Bernice Hammonds; eight brothers and four sisters.


Freda was a mother, housewife and a coal miner’s daughter. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Stars, Mary Montgomery No. 231.


Survivors include four sons, William E. Hammonds and Eddie R. (Susie) Hammonds, both of Proctorville, Ohio, Denzel Hammonds of Cowpens, S.C., and Thurman Hammonds of Gaffney, S.C.; three daughters, Freda L. (David) Varner of Pacolet, Rene Ellen Heath of Greer, S.C., and Cecilia (Darren) Worley of Cowpens; a brother, Thomas Judson Bailey of Fairmont; three sisters, Berlin Adkins and Wanda Sue Davidson, both of Harrisville, and Lucil Sutphin of Burn House; and a dear family friend, Sybil Horton. Freda was blessed 27 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, and a great-great granddaughter.


A funeral service with Eastern Star rites will be held at noon Saturday, November 17, at the Dunbar Funeral Home with Rev. Baxter Toler of Man and Rev. Lisa Spencer of Pacolet officiating. Interment will be at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.


The family will receive friends from 11 a.m.-noon Saturday at the funeral home.
