LOGAN – This is the Seventh Annual Matt Patterson Memorial Toy Drive, which is held each year in honor of the late Matt Patterson.
Matt would help his mother distribute toys to children on his Christmas vacation from school. His mother continues to distribute toys in Matt’s memory.
“This started seven years ago at the cemetery. I had the thought to not let die his helping the kids. He always said this was the best part of Christmas,” said his mother.
Matt, son of Herman Patterson and Candy Patterson-Brewer, passed away in July of 2005. He is survived by one sister, Emily, and grandparents Herman and Johnnie Patterson. He was also the grandson of the late Alberta and Everett “Shorty” Evans.
“I lost my mother Alberta Evans and my brother Harold Lee Evans this year. They passed away exactly three months to the day apart. We are focusing on having more bikes for children this year in honor of my brother, who always donated a bike even before we started the toy drive,” said Candy.
Drop off points for toys are the LEASA office behind McDonald’s in Logan; Giovanni’s in Logan; Fast Change Lube beside McDonald’s at the Wal-Mart Plaza, Logan Bank and Trust at Fountain Place and Thornhill Superstore at Chapmanville. Candy says Thornhill’s has a truck in their showroom they are trying to fill.
Candy says there are many more people, churches and other organizations getting involved this year.
“My heart is just so thankful for all the people who have helped me. Whatever the need has been, people have been there to fill it,” she continued, “With so many more people getting involved, the toy drive just keeps growing and getting better every year.Despite the way the economy has been, this may be the best toy drive we have had yet. Having more things means we can help more people. We make sure that all the children whose names are submitted to us will be taken care of.”
Anyone wanting to make a donation can leave toys at any of the above-mentioned drop off points until Dec. 18, or they can call Candy at 752-9609. The Matt Patterson Memorial Toy Drive is a non-profit organization and monetary donations will be accepted. Please feel free to call for more information.
All donations benefit children in Logan County.
