The Logan High School girls’ basketball team issued some “Capital punishment” on Saturday at Logan’s Willie Akers Arena after the Lady Cats cruised to a 49-31 win over the Capital Cougars.

Logan improved to 3-2 on the season and won its second straight game. The Lady Cats were coming off last week’s 56-55 victory at Huntington — the first-ever time LHS had won over the Highlanders in girls’ basketball.

Two Logan players recorded double-doubles in the win over Capital as freshman center Monica Mitchell had 16 points and 15 rebounds and all-state sophomore guard Shayna Gore had 15 points and 10 assists.

Kyra Cline also had double digits in scoring with 11 points.

Summer Collins added five points for the Lady Cats while Kelsey Kirk chipped in with two.

Logan led Capital 8-4 after the first quarter and 22-15 at the half. Logan then had a third quarter explosion which saw the Lady Cats outscore the Cougars 18-5 to take a commanding 40-20 advantage. Capital outpointed Logan 11-9 in the fourth quarter to set the final score.

Logan is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday night at home against Tolsia. Game time is set for 7 p.m. It’s the last game for Logan before the Christmas holiday break. The Lady Cats won’t return to the hardwood until Jan. 4 when Class AAA state power Morgantown comes to Willie Akers Arena.

Chapmanville 31

NEWTOWN — It was another disappointing loss for the Chapmanville Regional High School girls’ basketball team, which fell 48-31 at Mingo Central on Saturday afternoon in Cardinal Conference action.

Chapmanville dropped to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the league.

It was the second straight loss for the Lady Tigers against Class AA sectional teams. Chapmanville had lost 56-55 at Tolsia on Dec. 11. CRHS is now 0-2 this season against sectional foes.

Mingo Central (2-3), led 16-5 after one quarter, 35-16 at the half and 41-26 after three. The Miners then outpointed Chapmanville 7-5 in the fourth.

Kristin DesRocher paced the Lady Tigers with 14 points. Jessica Rideout had seven, Katelynn Hall six and Chelcie Pritchard two. Hailey Price and Autumn Baisden had one point each.

Chapmanville was held to just 11 field goals, including three makes from beyond the 3-point arc. The Lady Tigers were only 6-for-13 from the free throw line.

Mingo Central, coached by Don Taylor, had balanced scoring, led by Ashley Curry’s 14 points. Chrissy Farmer had nine, Brittany Stumbo eight, Kiearia Hammond seven and Brittany Maynard six. Bri Smith and Miranda Evans tallied two each.

The Miners sank 21 field goals, including two 3-pointers. Mingo Central was 4-for-6 from the charity stripe.

Chapmanville is scheduled to play next on Friday at 3:30 p.m. against Nicholas County in the Hoops Classic at the Charleston Civic Center.

The Lady Tigers then play one more time over Christmas break — a Dec. 27 contest against Keyser in the Capital City Classic at the Charleston Catholic Athletic Complex. Game time is 3 p.m.

The Miners were scheduled to host county rival Tug Valley on Monday night. MC then goes to Poca on Thursday night in Cardinal Conference action. Chapmanville beat the Dots handily at home last week.

Chapmanville and Mingo Central are scheduled to play a second time on Feb. 9 at CRHS.
