Billies fall to new sectional foe Tug Valley
MAN — The Man High School boys’ basketball team dropped to 2-8 on the season with Wednesday night’s 82-49 loss at home to new Class A sectional opponent Tug Valley at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse.
The Billies have lost three straight and are just 1-8 since opening the season with a victory over River View.
Freshman guard John Thomas Keffer led Man with 16 points before fouling out.
Jake Adkins also reached double figures in scoring with 13 points. He also hauled down eight rebounds.
Chris Justice finished with six points, while Kenny Joe Adkins had five, Cayce Mullins four, Erik Files three and Robert Caudill two.
Tug Valley placed three players in double digits, led by Mickey Newsome who poured in 20 points and was 3-for-5 from 3-point territory.
Austin Brewer had 15 points and three blocked shots for the Panthers.
Joshua White had 10 points.
Aaron Muncy had nine points, five rebounds and two blocks for Tug Valley.
Hayden Sturgell contributed eight points, while Chandler Runyon and Austin Baisden tallied three each. Thomas Baisden had two points and five rebounds. Kyle Newsome, Austin Kitchen and Ethan Hager all finished with two points for Tug Valley.
The Panthers shot well from the field as Tug hit on 26-for-52 of its field goals for 50 percent. Man was just 15-for-57 for 26 percent.
Tug Valley connected on 15-of-21 free throws for 71 percent. The Billies were 16-for-21 for 76 percent.
The Panthers jumped out to a 28-10 lead after one quarter and never looked back. A 22-9 second quarter pushed the lead to 50-19 at the half. Tug Valley then outscored Man 16-7 in the third to make it a 66-26 ballgame. The Billies outpointed the Panthers 23-16 in the fourth.
The Billies are back in action on Saturday night at home against Fayetteville. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. Man then hosts Class AA Westside next Tuesday night. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. The Renegades just beat Man 105-55 on Tuesday night.
Man then plays at Greater Beckley Christian on Jan. 18, hosts River View on Jan. 22 and hosts Greater Beckley Christian in a return game on Jan. 25.
Tug Valley plays GBC on Friday night at home and then hosts Ashland (Ky.) on Saturday night at Naugatuck.
Man and Tug Valley play each other again on Jan. 26 at TVHS.
