SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. — Glen Maynard, 86, of Surfside Beach, S.C., passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital after a short illness.


Born August 21, 1926, he was a son of the late Willie and Dovie Maynard. Also preceding him in death was his wife of 57 years, Ruth Ann Welch Maynard; four brothers, Lowell, Lathan, Herbert and Noah Maynard, and two sisters, Irene Maynard Snyder and Lorena Maynard Skeens.


Glen served in the Army Air Corps for two years during World War II and then further served his country in the U.S. Air Force for the next 18 years. After retiring from the Air Force he taught industrial arts at Socastee High School for an additional 18 years and was loved and admired by his many students long after his retirement from teaching. He was a member of the Murrells Inlet VFW for many years. Glen was a doer, he always had to be busy working with his hands, whether it was creating something beautiful and lasting in his wood shop, or tinkering with any type of engine that wouldn’t work, Glen was happiest when he was working with his tools.


Survivors include his sons, Rodney (Staci) of Kentucky, Gregory (June) and Timothy of Conway, S.C., and Danny (Barbara) of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Krystal Maynard, Megan Maynard, Jessica Maynard Wilson, Jeremy Maynard, Molly Maynard Todd, Webb Maynard and Logan Maynard, and three great-grandchildren.


A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, January 21, at Hillcrest Cemetery.


The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
