CHAPMANVILLE — The 1-3 start and the 29-point pre-Christmas game against Poca now seem like distant memories.

That’s because the Chapmanville Tigers are on a roll.

The Chapmanville Regional High School boys’ basketball team improved to 8-4 on the season and won its seventh game in its last eight tries with Saturday’s 80-54 victory at home over Nicholas County at the CRHS gym.

Chapmanville, which was playing its second game in two days, showed no signs of wear. The Tigers had blown out Cardinal Conference foe Wayne, 52-29, last Friday night at home.

The Tigers, winners of four straight games, got a monster effort from 6-foot-4 senior forward/center Mackenzie Martin, who recorded a double-double with 33 points and 16 rebounds.

Mike Hurst also netted 14 points for Chapmanville, while Trey Dalton also reached double figures in scoring with 13 points. Kenny Plumley added seven, Brady Cox six, Jon Williamson five and Zac Casto two.

Jared Tharp led Nicholas County (6-6) with 18 points followed by Eric Peyatt with 12 and Cody McClung with 11.

Chapmanville led the Grizzlies just 23-22 in the first quarter before completely dominating the second quarter with a 27-4 edge which pushed the lead to 50-26 at halftime. Nicholas outscored Chapmanville 16-15 in the third as the Tigers led 65-42. The Tigers then outpointed the Grizzlies 15-12 in the fourth to set the final score.

Chapmanville, coached by first-year mentor Allan Hatcher, are scheduled to return to action Tuesday night at Herbert Hoover. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The Tigers routed the Huskies 42-24 in the season opener at home.

The game with Hoover is the first of three straight road games.

The Tigers are then at Tolsia on Friday and at Nicholas County on Jan. 29 before returning home to face off with arch rival Scott on Feb. 1.

Shealyn Shafer paced Nicholas County with 28 points. Lauren Young pitched in 11 points.

The Lady Grizzlies improved to 13-1 on the season with the win.

Nicholas County led 15-4 after one quarter, 27-18 at the half and 38-30 after three.

Saturday’s clash was a makeup game from the Dec. 21 Hoops Classic contest at the Charleston Civic Center which was postponed due to snowy weather.

The Lady Tigers have eight games left in the regular season beginning with Tuesday night’s home game against Sherman. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

Chapmanville then has a second straight non-conference game with the Jan. 30 contest at home against Class AAA county rival Logan.

The Lady Tigers then return to Cardinal Conference action on Feb. 4 as Chapmanville hits the road at Poca.
