NAUGATUCK – Tug Valley High School basketball teams have something this year that they haven’t had before.

Live coverage on the radio and the internet.

Senior Jordon Mounts is broadcasting most of the boy’s games and a few of the girl’s contests. Mounts has served as the public address announcer the past couple of seasons during football and basketball.

This year he took it to another level by making arrangements with WFGH radio in Fort Gay and locally on WVKM 106.7 FM in Matewan and on the internet at www.wfghfm.com.

“During football season, I assisted Mr. Fred Damron of WFGH Radio/Wayne County Schools and set up the radio equipment so they could broadcast the Tolsia/Tug Valley game which was held at Tug Valley High School,” Mounts said. “Since our Fellowship of Christian Athletes was going to host a tailgate party, Damron asked me to do a one hour segment before the game which would highlight Tug Valley’s FOCA organization.

“After that, he asked me to join the Wayne County broadcasters in broadcasting the Wayne County Middle School football games. I also got to assist with the Mingo Central/Tolsia football game. This was my on-the-job training.”

Mounts also broadcast this fall the Tug Valley at Weirton Madonna Class A football playoff game.

“When Tug Valley went to the Weirton to play in the first round of the Class A high school football playoffs, I was on my own for the first time,” Mounts said. “From there we made plans for me to broadcast all Tug Valley girls and boys basketball games. My color commentator is Tristan Maynard, but it can be anyone from parents, coaches, to basketball players who sit beside me and do the color commentary,” he said. Some of the boy’s players have done some commentary during the girl’s games.”

Mounts said the Fort Gay station has loaned him the equipment to get started.

“The equipment that I am using is being loaned to Tug Valley High School by WFGH FM radio station,” he said. “We are hoping to be able to purchase our own equipment so that after I go to college, radio and Internet coverage can continue for Tug Valley High School sports teams. This type of publicity is something new to Tug Valley athletes, so all of our of fans, parents, athletes, and Tug Valley staff are excited about the ability. For those who cannot attend the games, it helps them to be able to keep up with the Panther sports programs.”

Mounts said he plans on attending the University of Charleston this fall.

“I will be attending the University of Charleston beginning in the fall of 2013 and I hope to be able to continue to help with the coverage of Tug Valley sports when my schedule allows,” Mounts said.

An honor student, who has long been active with the robotics team, Mounts is also a standout baseball player for Tug Valley.
