“O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; to see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary” (Psalm 63:1-2). As one reads this Psalm and 1 Samuel 23:15, we are told that during this time David was in the wilderness of Judah around Ziph. “And David saw that Saul was come out to seek his life: and David was in the wilderness of Ziph in a wood.” This wilderness was a place that was not fruitful and it was a place that was so desolate and lonely. It was not a place where people wanted to live.

If we look at this wilderness, it reminds us of how this world. And if we look closer, we can see churches today that are so desolate and lonely. In these churches there is no peace, but it won’t be that way in heaven. Heaven will be a place where New Jerusalem will be for a long while. Heaven is also paradise where there will be no desert ground. This Psalm is a psalm for preparing us for the wilderness we must live in today.

As we look around, all we can see today is strife and difficulties, which come from this old world we live in. If we let the wilderness of this world get to us, we will get out of tune with our Lord. We as Christians must keep up a cheerful talk with our Lord Jesus, no matter how difficult it might be. We might not live in the wilderness of Judah like David did, but we do live in the wilderness of sin that is all around us.

Let us look at this Psalm 63 that help David through his wilderness journey. I believe this same Psalm can help us.

I. Relationship:

David had a relationship with God, “O God, thou art my God:” Here David was acknowledging who was his God; he was the One who has authority over us. God is the creator of this word and everything that lives in this world.

David was also saying that this God (Elihim) is the rightful owner and ruler over this world and of our lives. He is the living God and He does exist. “The fool hath said in his heart. There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good” (Psalm 14:1). The way David talked, it took real faith, and that faith was a living faith. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrew 11:1). There are many today who are worshipping their own gods: These gods can be your homes, children, your jobs, or boats. We could go on and on about these gods. “Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God…”(Exodus 20:5).

We as Christians, must say the same as David said, “O God thou art my God.” We must speak this with the greatest pleasure to ourselves, and be thankful to God.

II. Desire:

“…early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is” (Psalms 63:1a). Here David tells us that we must seek God early in the morning. This should be the first thing we do before the day get started. David goes on and tells us that this is his desire. He longed, and he languished till he could be restored to the liberty of God’s ways. He longed to enjoy God. How about you? Do you long to seek God’s face the first thing when you get up, or do you wait until you get breakfast, or read the paper? David tells us to seek God first if you want your prayers answered, then God will have his way in your life. We live in a dry thirsty land. Everywhere you look, people are trying to put Christ in the corner. If God is going to bless us, we must seek God early or we will dry up like the sinners are in this world. We need to put Christ first in our lives if we are going to see his power and glory in our life, in our family, and in our country. Our country is drying up. We Christians need to keep in touch with God then He will water and bless our country. The sinner can’t do this.

It is up to us to seek and praise God so our country as well as us can prosper!
