Doctor arrested on drug charges
Police say the arrest of a doctor who was operating a “pill mill” is a major step toward getting to the root of the area’s drug problem.
Complaint calls from the public about the type of operation the doctor was running prompted a lengthy investigation and subsequent arrest of Dr. Fernando Gonzalez-Ramos, 47, of El Paso, Texas.
“We’ve been having a lot of community call-ins in regards to this. Just the traffic in the area to a doctor’s office — led us to believe something else was going on here,” Logan County Sheriff Sonya Porter said.
Gonzalez’s office is located on Route 10 in West Logan. Police say the building has no running water, and there was a line of patients waiting when they arrived Sunday morning.
West Virginia State Police, the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, US 119 Drug Task Force, Huntington Drug Task Force and the FBI served a federal search warrant to search Gonzalez’s office. That search led to the arrest of Dr. Gonzalez-Ramos Sunday afternoon. He has been charged with conspiracy to deliver controlled substances.
Details about the evidence collected aren’t being released just yet.
Gonzalez was taken to the South Central Jail to await arraignment in federal court. The US Attorney’s Office will be prosecuting the case.
