CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A Boone County man will spend 20 years in prison for shooting his friend.

Media outlets report that 39-year-old John Hudson claimed he accidentally shot Michelle Gillispie in January 2012. He said he panicked, took her car, some electronics and tools and pawned the items to get money to leave town.

Hudson was staying with Gillispie and her boyfriend. He said she had pulled a gun and threatened to kill her boyfriend, who was not home at the time, and that he was trying to disarm her but instead shot her in the head.

Prosecutors acknowledged Tuesday that they couldn’t prove the slaying was premeditated. Instead, they agreed to a deal in which Hudson pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Hudson had served nearly six years in prison for a methamphetamine charge.
