Slam scheme for new customers in area
If a call whose number is unidentified by caller ID, or begins with “Congratulations, you have won,” there is a good chance the call is a scam to obtain money or personal information. The number and type of scams increases every day and a 75-year-old McConnell resident was recently told she had been “slammed.”
The elderly woman spends most of her time and energy caring for her husband who has multiple physical challenges and suffers from Alzheimer’s. It was easy for a telemarketer to confuse her when they called.
She said her understanding of what the Clear Rate Communications representative told her was Clear Rate had bought out Frontier Communications, the new company would offer better telephone service for less money and Frontier was no longer able to provide her service.
When the first bill arrived in just two weeks, she decided to call Frontier to verify what she had been told by the Clear Rate Communications Representative. Frontier explained what had happened and re-established the account.
Frontier Communications General Manager for Logan Zachary Tomblin was surprised to hear about the call and said he had never heard of Clear Rate Communications. As he investigated the incident, he learned more calls are being reported.
Tomblin said, “If customers are slammed, we will help them change back to their chosen carrier. Customers also have the right to be reimbursed for overcharges by the slamming carrier, and they have the right to call and complain to the West Virginia Public Service Commission. We encourage slammed customers to exercise their rights.”
If you receive one of these calls, or any call which would result in a transfer of service, check with your current provider before authorizing the change.
