The Chapmanville Regional High School softball team’s opener at Mingo Central on Friday evening didn’t expect to be a very close game.

After blowout wins over the Lady Miners last season, 16-0 and 21-0 on a pair of no-hitters, this one was sure to be more of the same.

It was more of the same as Chapmanville routed Mingo Central 18-0 in the season opener for both teams on Friday at the MC softball field in Delbarton.

The Lady Tigers are coming off a 24-6 season in which they lost 8-3 to eventual Class AA state champion Wayne in the regional semifinals.

Friday’s game marked the first game in season number 33 for Chapmanville coach Ronnie Ooten, who has led the Lady Tigers’ softball program since their first season in 1981.

Talya Berry fired a no-hitter in the three-inning game with seven strikeouts and one walk. She had a double at the plate.

Samara Hurst was 2-for-3 with a double for the Lady Tigers. Hanna Wooten went 2-for-3 as well, while Lauryn Easterling was 2-for-4.

Brandi Broom ripped out a triple for Chapmanville. Caitlin Elkins and Cyndee Lambert added singles.

Emma Paris laid down a sacrifice bunt. Shian Meeks drove in one run with a sac fly.

Chapmanville won 11-0 over Mingo Central in the JV game.

Chapmanville (1-0) is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday at Poca in a 6 p.m. ballgame, weather permitting. The Lady Tigers then host Sissonville on Thursday in the home opener at 5:30 p.m. at Ronnie Ooten Field in Chapmanville.

CRHS then goes to Sherman on March 22, hosts 3A Point Pleasant on March 23 at 1 p.m. and then hosts 3A county rival Logan on March 26 at 5:30 p.m.

Chapmanville has a rematch with Wayne on March 27 at home and then goes to Class AA sectional rival Scott on March 28.
