CHAPMANVILLE — Mother Nature was the winner on Monday night at Chapmanville as the Chapmanville Regional High School baseball team had its season opener with Sherman rained out.

The game has been rescheduled and moved to April 22 as part of a home doubleheader at Chapmanville’s Ted Ellis Field at 5:30 p.m. The Tigers had originally been scheduled to play at Sherman on April 22 but will instead play two at home against the Tide.

Chapmanville’s new season opener is now Thursday at home against Mingo Central in a 6 p.m. ballgame. The game was supposed to be played at MC’s home field at Gilbert but was switched to Ted Ellis Field due to poor playing conditions.

The Tigers then are slated to host Point Pleasant on Friday at home in a time to be announced later. The original game time was set for 7 p.m. but Chapmanville coach Eric Ellis said that might be moved up to 4:30 p.m.

Chapmanville is coming off last year’s 20-12 season in which the Tigers were ousted by Wayne in the Class AA regional semifinals.

Ellis said his team is ready to begin the season despite the rough start weather-wise.

“I’m really pleased with where we are at but we’ve got a long way to go,” he said. “We look forward to a challenging schedule and hope to get outside and get better every day. Our goal is to get better and hopefully compete for the trophy in June.”

Ellis said his team has been hampered by the mostly poor March weather.

“With the new bats you really have to square it up to hit it hard and with the cold weather that really takes away from that as well,” he said. “We will probably play a different style this year. We’re going to he hitting and running and we’re going to be playing more small ball than we have in the past. We’re going to be very aggressive, so we’re going to be a fun team to watch.”
