The West Virginia State Police responded to a motor vehicle accident on W.Va. Route 44 in the Omar area and found a parked vehicle had been hit and arrested the driver of the car who hit it.

Edward P. Hatfield Jr., 42, of Chapmanville, was sitting in the driver’s seat, without a seat belt. The officers state in the criminal complaint the defendant was very disoriented, his eyes appeared glazed over, he had a hard time staying awake and needed assistance to walk. There was no odor of alcohol, but officers found a prescription bottle in a nearby ditch.

Hatfield told the officers he had taken Xanax and Lortab before the accident. Field sobriety tests were attempted but Hatfield could not complete them due to his condition.

No proof of insurance was found in the vehicle, and a DMV inquiry revealed Hatfield was driving on a revoked license and had been convicted on November 19, 2008, for driving while license was suspended or revoked second offense.

Hatfield consented to a blood test and was transported to Logan Regional Medical Center. The blood sample has been sent to the West Virginia State Police Lab for testing.

Hatfield was charged with DUI, no seat belt, driving while suspended third offense, no insurance, failure to maintain control of vehicle. His bond was set at $7,000.
