The Chapmanville Regional High School track and field team went to Cabell Midland High School on March 28 and saw some good individual performances.

Two Chapmanville boys placed and several athletes were able to beat their own times from the previous meet, including Devin Wiley, Andrew Workman, Mara Mazzocchi and Andrew Thompson.

Austin Baker also improved his throw in the discus by 25 feet for a personal best.

The meet attracted 18 schools.

Workman finished with a personal best in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.39. He finished first in his heat.

Mazzacchi also posted a personal best in the 400 with a time of 1:09.03.

Wiley ended up taking sixth place in the 100-meter dash. He received a ribbon for placing in the event which had more than 50 participants, including runners from Class AAA schools.

Workman was fifth in the 200-meter dash out of around 60 runners. He is currently ranked third in the state in Class AA.

The Chapmanville track team is slated to have another meet on Tuesday at Poca High School’s Dick Darby Classic.

CRHS track coach Joetta Thompson said she saw some good things at Cabell Midland.

“We faced a lot of AAA schools with talented athletes who have proper facilities to practice on and with and we still pulled out some winners as well as personal bests,” she said. “As long as my teams keeps training and trying, we will continue to have a great season. I am proud of their effort and attitudes to date. Hopefully we’ll do even better at the upcoming meet at Poca.”
