It was a significant win for the Logan High School baseball team on Tuesday night at Nitro as the LHS Wildcats downed the Nitro Wildcats 4-3.
Logan improved to 6-3 on the season with the win.
It was the first game back for the Wildcats, which went 2-2 last week in the Mingo Bay Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Nitro, ranked No. 6 in the state in Class AAA and a new sectional opponent of Logan’s, dropped to 6-3.
Troy Burgess allowed just two earned runs over six innings while striking out seven to earn the win. Z. Minnick pitched the seventh for the save.
Burgess also went 2-for-2 with two RBI. Minnick added a double.
Josh Rein also had a single for Logan, which outhit Nitro 4-3.
Tyler Barton went 2-for-2 to lead Nitro.
Nitro committed two errors to one for Logan.
Logan was scheduled to play at Man on Wednesday. The Cats then go to Ripley on Friday at 7 p.m. before hosting 3A regional foe Winfield on Saturday at 7. LHS then hosts regional opponents Cabell Midland on April 15 at 7 and Lincoln County on April 17 at 7.
Sherman 5, Logan 4
Class A No. 4-ranked Sherman ran its record to 9-4 on the season with Tuesday’s 5-4 win over Class AAA Logan at home.
Tori May went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and RBI to lead the Tide. Mackenzie Smith also had three hits for Sherman, while Paige Halstead finished with two hits.
Logan (5-7) was led by Shana Hall who was 2-for-2 at the plate. Aarron Ward also led the team as she was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Rachelle Toppings went 2-for-4 as well.
Tied 4-4, Sherman won it with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
May was the winning pitcher for the Tide.
Hall started and went five innings for Logan. Ward pitched the last two innings and took the loss.
The Lady Cats were slated to host Man on Wednesday. Logan hosts Scott on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Logan is 3-7 over its last 10 games after a 2-0 start to the season.
