MAN — The Man High School softball team improved to 15-5 on the season with Tuesday night’s 10-0 mercy-shortened win at home over the Van Lady Bulldogs on Senior Night.
Man senior pitcher Taylor Tomblin hurled a one-hit shutout in posting the victory.
Whitney Workman had Van’s lone hit — a single off Tomblin.
The Class A No. 7-ranked Lady Billies scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning off Van pitcher Stevie White.
Kelly Grimmett walked and Summer Sword then was hit by a pitch, while Emilee Osborne walked to load the bases.
Tomblin then was hit by a pitch to force in a run as Man led 1-0.
Tabby Ferguson then had an RBI groundout to make it 2-0.
Senior Micayla Gibson and freshman Emily Toler, who was playing for the injured Cari Blair, both followed with RBI singles to give the Lady Billies a 4-0 advantage after the first inning of play.
Tomblin held the Lady Bulldogs in check in the second and third innings.
Man scored four more runs off White in the third inning to take a commanding 8-0 lead.
Tomblin led off with a walk. Ferguson then flew out. Gibson reached on an error before Toler clubbed an RBI single to make it 5-0.
Casey Albright then reached on a walk to load the bases. Rachael Griffith then ripped a two-run single to give Man a 7-0 lead. Sword then delivered an RBI single to make it 8-0.
Tomblin fanned Stevie White to open the fourth inning, then got Chelsa Culloway and Cortney Weaver both to ground out.
Ferguson led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a single. Gibson and Toler both drew walks to load the bases.
Albright then delivered an RBI single to push the lead to 9-0.
Griffith then struck out. Grimmett then delivered a run scoring single to make it 10-0, halting the game due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Tomblin struck out five in tossing the one-hitter.
Man has now won six straight games, holding its opponents to two runs or less in all six contests. Three of those wins have been shutouts.
The Lady Billies were slated to host county rival Logan on Wednesday. On Thursday, Man goes to Tug Valley for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
