A 7th grade student at Chapmanville Middle School in Logan County has been selected as the grand prize winner of the West Virginia Money Smart Week essay contest. Emily Triplett earned the top spot, while six other students were selected as grade-level winners and runners up, including Chapmanville Middle School student Savannah Toney winning 7th Grade Second Place. Students across the state in grades six, seven and eight participated in the contest, part of a week-long series of financial literacy activities.


The topic: “What do you think are the three biggest financial decisions you’ll make in your life? What makes them big? Pick one decision and describe the steps you plan to take to prepare for that decision.”


The grand prize winner receives a $750 SMART529 College Savings Plan. The first place winner in each grade receives a $300 SMART529 College Savings Plan while the second place winner in each grade receives a $200 SMART529 College Savings Plan. In addition, the seven prize-winning students each win a Kindle Fire.


Partner organizations for this year’s essay contest were the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, West Virginia Financial Education Foundation, Bennett Educational Consulting, West Virginia Bankers Association, Poca Valley Bank, Whitesville State Bank, West Virginia Jump$tart Coalition, Junior Achievement of West Virginia, West Virginia Library Commission and West Virginia Department of Education. The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond crafted this year’s essay question on major financial decisions.


Money Smart Week is a public awareness campaign designed to help consumers better manage their personal finances. The 4th Annual West Money Smart Week was held April 20 – 27, 2013. More than 30 partner organizations collaborated to provide free workshops and activities across the state that stressed the importance of financial literacy.
