The Man High School baseball team won again.
The Hillbillies earned a doubleheader split with Oak Hill Red Devils on Saturday, taking the first game 7-6 before dropping the second game 10-9.
In Game One, the Man (2-20) jumped out a 4-0 lead and held off a late Red Devils (8-13) charge for the victory.
Braden Griffin picked up his first victory of the season allowing three runs and scattering five hits while striking out 11 and walking two in five innings of work.
Noah Maynard was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate.
Cody Carter drove in two runs and stole two bases.
Man plated three runs in the second inning. Bailey Beckwith started the inning with a leadoff walk and later scored on a passed ball to give the Hillbillies a 1-0 lead. Kenny Joe Adkins singled to score Mikle Scott Rowe to make it 2-0. Adkins would later score on a throwing error to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.
The Billies added to their lead in the top of the fourth when Maynard singled to right field to score Brandon Cook, increasing the lead to 4-0. Oak Hill got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Ricky Epperly singled to score Damaria Davis to cut the Man lead to 4-1.
The Red Devils cut the deficit to one, 4-3, with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, chasing Griffin from the game. Wes Stowers’ single scored Bubba Smith to make it 4-2 and Stowers later scored on a passed ball to make it 4-3 after five innings.
Man extended its lead to 7-3 with three runs in the top of the sixth. Cayce Mullins singled to plate Josh Browning, giving Man a 5-3 lead. One batter and three pitches later, Carter singled to score Adkins and Maynard giving the Hillbillies a 7-3 cushion.
Oak Hill scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth off relief pitcher John Thomas Keffer to trim the deficit to 7-5 as Smith had a sacrifice fly and Stowers drove in his second run of the game to get the Red Devils back in the contest.
Oak Hill loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with one out but the Red Devils could only scratch across one run when Smith grounded into a fielder’s choice as Keffer got Daniel Pritt to fly out to Carter to end the first game.
Keffer allowed three runs on three hits and struck out one in two innings of relief. Adkins and Mullins each had one hit and one RBI for Man who also got hits from Keffer, Neil Mullins and Rowe.
Stowers had three hits and two RBI for the Red Devils who also got a pair of RBIs from Smith. Epperly had a pair of hits to go along with a RBI. Chris Hysell tossed a complete game allowing seven runs on 10 hits while walking three and striking out three.
* In the second game, Man’s seventh-inning rally fell short as Oak Hill held on for a 10-9 victory avoiding the sweep and preventing Man from riding its first two-game winning streak of the season.
Trailing 10-4 heading into the seventh inning, the Billies plated five runs to pull within one and had the tying run on second base and the go ahead run on first when Adkins grounded out to second to end the game.
Griffin hit a three-run home run for Man.
First baseman Neil Mullins started the scoring with a single to plate Adkins to cut it to 10-5.
Chris Justice scored on an error to cut it to 10-6 and Griffin slammed a three-run home run over the right field fence to trim the deficit to 10-9.
However, Adam Tincher struck out Cayce Mullins looking for the first out, walked Carter, struck out Joe Rosser swinging and hit Rowe with a pitch before getting Adkins to ground out to end the ballgame.
Man fell behind 3-0 after one inning and cut the deficit to 3-1 when Bailey Beckwith walked and scored on a pass ball in the second inning. Oak Hill added a three runs in third and another in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead but Man responded with three runs in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 7-4.
Rosser walked and would later score on a passed ball to make it 7-2. Derek Messer scored on Justice’s RBI fielder’s choice to make it 7-3 and Brandon Cook scored on Maynard’s sacrifice fly to bring the Billies within three, 7-4, however, the Red Devils answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to surge ahead 10-4 heading into the seventh.
Austin Cook was the tough luck loser for Man on the hill, allowing six runs, only one earned, on six hits while striking out two in three innings of work. Rowe tossed three innings of relief allowing four runs on five hits while striking out one and walking one.
Oak Hill took advantage of six Man errors parlaying them into six unearned runs.
Daniel Pritt allowed eight runs in six innings of work on the mound for Oak Hill. Pritt allowed just three hits but walked eight batters and struck out three batters. Tincher relieved Pritt in the seventh, allowing one hit and striking out two for the save.
Oak Hill got two hits each from Hysell, Adam Jones, Austin Nolen, Pritt and Stowers. Pritt and Ray Sullivan each drove in two runs while Hysell, Jones and Stowers each drove in one.
Griffin led Man with two hits and three RBI. Justice and Neil Mullins each had a hit and drove in a run while Maynard added a RBI.
Man was scheduled to return to action Tuesday at Class AAA No. 9 Logan. On Wednesday, Man hosts Westside. The Billies close out the regular season on Thursday night at regional foe Sherman.
